Say Something

The evidence-informed Say Something program cultivates and reinforces a culture of Upstanders and includes flexible training options, discussion guides, and engaging lesson plans.

About the Say Something Program

The Say Something program teaches youth in grades K-12 to recognize the warning signs of someone who may be in crisis and when and how to get help from Trusted Adults. The evidence-informed Say Something program cultivates and reinforces a culture of Upstanders and includes flexible training options, discussion guides, and engaging lesson plans. Say Something is designed around three goals that are accomplished using the program's framework and reinforced through the program cycle.

Goals

The three goals of the Say Something program are to teach students how to:

  • Recognize warning signs and threats.
  • "Say something" to a Trusted Adult to get help.
  • Grow a community of Upstanders who look out for one another.

Program Framework

The goals are accomplished using our three-step program framework:

  1. Recognize warning signs and threats: Learn what warning signs and threats are and where they are likely to be found.
  2. Act Immediately; Take it Seriously: Understand how to take action and overcome the barriers that may exist to being an "Upstander" in prevention rather than a "bystander" to violence, victimization, or self-harm.
  3. "Say Something": Discover how to intervene when seeing warning signs and threats by telling a Trusted Adult and knowing who to go to for help.

How Say Something Works

To successfully implement the Say Something program and support students in creating a culture of Upstanders who help keep their school safe all year long, Sandy Hook Promise has developed a five-stage program cycle.

In addition, our Collections feature below conveniently bundles together curated resources from each stage of the Program Cycle.

  1. Plan

Plan a roadmap using our template for each stage of the program cycle.

  2. Train

Train students using the foundational training.

  3. Engage

Engage students throughout the year in learning activities that will deepen their understanding of the programs.

  4. Celebrate

Celebrate the Say Something message through various engaging activities conducted during Call-to-Action weeks or celebrate during another time that works best for you.

  5. Grow

Grow the Say Something message in your community by implementing additional activities.
